CUBOREE 2010 WELFARE MESSAGE

I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you a little about Welfare at Cuboree:

I know Cuboree is still 12 months away, and some of the cubs you will be bringing to camp have not even joined up yet, but if you can take this information back with you, tuck it away til it's needed, and then share it with others, this will assist enormously in getting the message out there. .

My role as Welfare Manager involves looking after both the welfare and first aid aspects of Cuboree, for everyone in camp: youth, venturers, and adults.

1: WELFARE NETWORK AT CAMP:

For anything that arises at camp that is beyond the scope of simple pack first aid and welfare care, we will have a wide support network in place for you, focused mainly within the subcamps. A medical centre will be there for more serious stuff.

  • We want Cuboree to be a positive experience for everyone concerned, especially the cubs. We want them to thrive on the experience, not just survive it. And while we can do a lot to alleviate troubles at camp, the Welfare side of things is much more than that.

  • The really important stuff is getting them prepared for camp, with the right gear and the right training, so they are confident about the idea and their ability to manage.

  • And if the cubs are well prepared, they cope better, and that in turn will reduce leaders workload and stress, which can only be a good thing.

And that's where you the cub leaders come in.

2: PRIOR TO CAMP: Some things that will really help:

  • Get the cubs to complete the Camp Out Badge, geared towards skills needed for Cuboree, and look for the parts of it they can practice over and over, so you know they can be self-reliant and confidant in their ability to cope .

  • Get the parents on side, to help their cubs become more independent.

  • Make sure parents are aware of the appropriate gear for camp. They may need to budget.

  • Organize a carer if a cub has special needs.... physical, medical, intellectual, dietary, allergies

  • Keep an eye on the www.cuboree.com.au Website for info and handy tips. / parents as well.

  • Network with leaders who have been to Cuboree before.
